bee decline linked to pesticides

Scientists have been alarmed and puzzled by declines in bee populations in the United States and other parts of the world. They have suspected that pesticides are playing a part  but to date their experiments have yielded conflicting wierd results. In Thursdays issue of the journal Science two teams of researchers published studies suggesting that low levels of a common pesticide can have significant effects on bee colonies.One experiment conducted by french researchers says that chemicals for honeybees brains making it harder for them to find their way home. The other study by british scientists suggests that they keep bumblebees from supplying their hives with enough food to produce new queens.

Hiker says bear stopped mountain lion attack

A California man said a bear saved him from an attack by a mountain lion while he was hiking in Butte County earlier this week. But officials are skeptical of the story, which has been picked up by the national media in recent days.State fish and game officials are invesigating but have raised doubts about whether the man's attack was really at the hands of a lion.Robert Biggs whos 69 said he was walking along trails near Paradise about 90 miles north of Sacramento when he saw a bear and her cub. He said he watched the pair for a while, then turned to leave.“I was bent over, going up the trail, and something jumped on my back and knocked me to my knees and I turned around, and it was a mountain lion.I had a rock in my right hand, and I come around and swing and hit him in the side of the head and it made a big screeching sound. And I come back to swing again, and I come around, and just about half way there, I see this dark figure grabbing the neck of the mountain lion and tearing it down the ground behind me”.

Anthony Davis of Kentucky wins player of the year

Anthony Davis is The Associated Presses college basketball Player of the Year the first Kentucky player and second freshman to win the award.He received 43 votes Friday from the 65member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Balloting was done before the NCAA tournament.The 6-foot-10 player from Chicago is the Southeastern Conferences Player, Freshman  of the year and Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 14.3 points 10.0 rebounds and 4.6 blocks and shot 64.2 percent. His block total is a school record and third best for a freshman.Kevin Durant from  Texas in 2007 is the only other freshman to win the award.Thomas Robinson from Kansas was second with 20 votes  and Draymond Green from Michigan State received the other two votes.

" Walmart of weed" opening in DC

A company called the " walmart of weed" is putting down its roots in dc. Just blocks from the white house and federal buildings, a company that candidly caters to medical marijuana growers is opening up its first outlet on the east coast the opening of the weGrow store on March 30 in Washington coincides with the first  step in devolping a city law allowing residents with certain medical conditions to purchase pot.Some people say its like supplying gold miners with pick axes, weGrow sees itself providing the necessary tools to pioneers of a "green rush" which some project could reach nearly $9 billion within the next five years. "The more that businesses start to push the envelope by showing that this is a legitimate industry, the further we're going to be able to go in changing peoples minds" said weGrow founder Dhar Mann.

Chris Singleton a rookie forward for the Washington Wizards tweeted on thursday saying: I'm about to drop 10000 on the lottery and cross my fingers #imhalfwaytoabillionareifiwin".The Mega Millions lottery jackpot prize  is at a record $500 million. Apparently that makes some people who ordinarily would not throw their money away on a small chance to get rich to suddenly throw their money away on an extremely small chance to get rich.He didnt appear to be joking.You guys are already rich” one follower said.“If I get richer, I will change the world for the better” Singleton said.

NASA shows moons evolution 4.5 billion years ago

Two new NASA videos use the latest close up imagery of the moon from the Lunar  Orbiter to reveal Earth's natural satellite in a whole new light.One video zooms over the moon to reveal its most prominent features. Imagery from the spacecraft shows these lunar highlights in high-resolution detail, revealing deep craters, towering mountains, and even leftover equipment at the NASAs apollo mean landing sites.The second video uses lunar images to animate the history of the moon from its formation around 4.5 billion years ago through today.Both videos were created by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter team at NASAs  goddard space center in in Greenbelt Md in honor of the probes 1,000th day in orbit. LRO was launched June 18 2009 from Cape Canaveral Florida.

New species of frog discovered in NYC

The  green critter was for years mistaken as belonging to a widespread variety of the leopard frog. But now scientists realize this is new."For a new species to go unrecognized in this area is amazing," UCLA biologist Brad Shaffer said Wednesday.New York is surrounded by wetlands and other naturefilled areas. But this latest urban creature appears to have chosen one of the grittiest corners as the center of its habitat: Yankee Stadium in the Bronx."Many amphibians are secretive and very hard to find, but these frogs are pretty obvious animals" said the bioligist.This shows that even in the largest city in the U.S there are still new and important species waiting to be discovered.

Major changes coming to google search

Google is working on the most drastic overhaul of its search technology in its history the wall street journal reported.the journal alleged that this update will help make Google search to rely heavily on technology called "semantic search which taps into the actual meaning of words. But  it will not ditch the current keyword based search, which determines the usefulness of a site based on items like the words it uses, how often other sites link to it, among other stuff. Google Search would also display more facts and answer direct questions at the top of the page  instead of just presenting links to other sites.

US reaches agreement to hand over detention center to afghan

A retired Pakistani army officer has written an unpublished report based on his own research that offers some new claims into the last years of Osama bin Ladens life  according to a report.Shaukat Qadir who is 62, a former infantry commander, spent thousands of dollars of his own money and eight months of investigation putting together a report because he was suspicious of official explanations of bin Laden's life and death the new york times reports. Part of the guys claims were that Osama's wife said that he had a kidney transplant in 2002. Another wife of his said that he shaved his beard to disquise himself as a Pushitin tribal elder while traveling from safehouse to safehouse.

4 year old boy found in 30 foot hole

State police in New Mexico said the body of a young kid has been recovered from a narrow, deep hole in Carlsbad.Spokesman Robert Mcdonald said police confirm the body is 4year old Samuel Jones, who disappeared Saturday from his southeastern New Mexico home.A New Mexico newspaper reported that officers reached the kid at about 6:30 a.m. Recovery efforts began Sunday afternoon, with a large tracked excavator, along with metal shoring typically used in pipeline construction projects. A specialized search and rescue team from Roswell went to Carlsbad to oversee the operations. They did a house to house search and a detective found a 14 inch whole.SamuelJones

Suicide Bomber attacks afgan base

A suicide bomber tried Monday to breach an outer gate of the giant U.S run installation north of Afghanistans capital.The attack killed two Afghan laborers who were leaving the base, the provincial governor said.The Taliban claimed responsibility in a text message sent to journalists, but the claim could not be immediately verified. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for a number of violent incidents that took place as riots rocked the country last month over what U.S. officials have called the supposed burning of copies of the Muslim holy book quran in  Bagram. Although the rioting ended nearly a week ago the effects are still being felt.
